Carella Takes F1 H20 World Title
Driving for the Qatar team, the American racer defends despite some racecourse mishaps.

Qatar’s Alex Carella successfully defended his Union Internationale Mototnautique F1 H20 World Championship during the 21st Grand Prix of Abu Dhabi, the final event of the 2012 UIM F1 H20 World Championship, in late November. Carella led from the start of the race, which was delayed by two yellow flags before being stopped for good after a crash took out two turn buoys.
Alex Carella won the third F1 World Championship for Qatar in five years.
Carella’s world championship was the third for the Qatar Marine Sports Federation-backed team in five years.

“I am really happy for the whole team, for Alex, for Sheikh Hassan and everyone at the QMSF,” Khalid bin Arhama Al-Kuwari, head of the head of Formula racing at the QMSF, which runs under Sheikh Hassan bin Jabor Al-Thani.
“It is a fantastic feeling for the team to secure the title for the second time in Abu Dhabi, and we can now go to Sharjah next week with no pressure and enjoy the racing. Even without Shaun (Torrente) we proved that we are still a strong team.”
A rising star from the United States in his rookie season, Torrente had his racing license withdrawn earlier this season for “dangerous driving and inappropriate behavior” during an F1 event in China. (Read the story.) For the world championships, veteran driver and fellow Qatar teammate Terry Rinker stepped into the cockpit. Rinker finished in eighth place.
